BARROW
ACADEMY
Built
in 1840, this is one of two New Orleans raised
cottage style homes in Madison, Georgia. The property is 2/3 acre
on a level, corner lot, featuring the main house, with walled yard and
gardens, front and rear brick driveways (for three vehicles), two storage
sheds and a guest house.
The
house was designed and built by Cyrus Barrow, and was used as a boys'
academy until the Civil War, when it functioned as a hospital, treating
wounded soldiers who arrived via the railroad. Many of these soldiers
are buried three blocks away in the old cemetery. The lower level
has a bedroom, full bath, family room and kitchen, brick floors and original
brick walls. The kitchen features granite countertops and large
cabinets. A room across from the kitchen adjoins the lower full
bath, and can be a bedroom, a baby room, an office or gym.
The upper level is Southern dignity at its
best. High ceilings, formal rooms, wood paneling, crown moulding,
hand-stenciled floors, French doors that open onto the expansive rear
porch. Upstairs has two bedrooms adjoining a full bath, and a formal
living room and dining room. The dining room might function as an
office or bedroom if dining is preferred downstairs.
The guest house, originally a slave cabin
from earlier the same century, is one of the oldest structures in Madison.
It has been revitalized and finished as a two room house with a full bath.
It presently functions as an office, but with the addition of a kitchenette
it would make a gracious house for in-laws, visitors or an apartment with
its own driveway.
The back of the estate is framed by an 11-foot
brick and stucco wall with arches. Horse-drawn carriage tours routinely
pass by Barrow Academy, and from its porches you can hear the chimes and
songs from the historic Episcopal church's bell tower at the top of the
street. The house and grounds have been kept in showroom condition
by the Bradleys for 17 years.

The houses featured on this site are both located in Madison,
Georgia. Madison is a rare gem, one of a few surviving Georgian
antebellum towns, with numerous mansions and estates that survived the
Civil War. The town is the county seat of
Morgan County, and a crossroads of Interstate 20, the Macon Highway (Rt.
441), Route 129 and railroads. One hour east of Atlanta, half an
hour south of Athens. Voted "Best Small Town in America"
by Travel & Holiday Magazine (Aug. 2001). This tiny city
features distinctive dining (both fine and family), delightful antiques
and curio boutiques, art, and loads of history.
