Barrow Academy, from the east.  Front and side yard.  Visible are the masonry wall with black iron fencing, gate to side yard and guest house, front porch, brick walkways.  Historic site marker.

Barrow Academy, front.  Generous front porch over recessed brick patio.  Dual staircases ascend to porch and second floor entrance.  Overhead fans add a steady breeze to the shaded sitting areas.

Barrow Academy, from the south. Standing in the back yard between the main house and the guest house.  Trees and garden areas have well-built brick surrounds.  The upper level dining room's double French doors open onto the ample rear porch for extended entertaining or dining, with views of the attractive grounds.  Some couples have chosen Barrow Academy's back yard for their weddings.

Barrow Academy, rear gate. The substantial gate covering the rear driveway (it's easy to open and close).  This is located beside the guest house, and connects to Fourth Avenue.  This photo affords a glimpse of the neighbors.

Barrow Academy, upper hallway.  This photo looks toward the upstairs rear entrance from the front.  The hallway is wide and stately, with wall and floor space to exhibit art, collectibles or family photos.  To the left is the formal living room, a bedroom on the right.  In the rear is the dining room on the left, a bedroom on the right.

Barrow Academy, formal living room.  This picture does not capture the ceiling height and crown moulding, but this room is an excellent conversation area, with fireplace, ample rear wall for artwork and family pictures, and truly sublime holiday gatherings.

Barrow Academy, dining room.  This room provides a royal, yet relaxed environment around gatherings of two or twelve.  To the right of the picture are the French doors that open onto the rear porch, overlooking the yard.  Fireplace, chandellier, painted pine floors.

Barrow Academy, upstairs, front bedroom.  High ceiling with paddle fan, four large windows, moulding, fireplace, adjoining bathroom with private toilet.

Barrow Academy, upstairs, rear bedroom.  This picture shows one of the two rear-facing French doors accessing the back porch.  This room also has high ceilings, fan, adjoins bathroom with private toilet.

Barrow Academy, lower level hallway.  Stay cooler on summer days as you enjoy the comforts downstairs.  The lower level floors are brick (with a coat of wax, surprisingly comfortable to bare feet).  Walls are wood (with remarkable bookcases) and exposed brick.  To the left as you enter the home is the family room, to the right a bedroom.  In the rear there's the kitchen on the left, an extra room (BR, office, breakfast nook or gym) on the right.

Barrow Academy, family room.  A perfect place for your media center, as the large front porch shades the windows across from the back wall.  The room connects to the kitchen, creating one of two loops downstairs that makes the house easy to navigate when you have numerous guests on holidays.  The fireplace with its regal mantle and flanking views of the south yard and gardens keep the room lively.

Barrow Academy, lower level bedroom.  A good choice for a master bedroom, just paces from the family room, kitchen and front door.  Fireplace, crown moulding, adjoining full bathroom with medicine closet.  Presently this room is decorated in rich tones (tromp l'oeil brick and leatherette effects and dark trim), but can be brighter and simpler to suit any taste.  Bonus room opposite side of bathroom can be used as a baby room, or an expanded closet and dressing area.

Barrow Academy, kitchen (view 1).  History and modern convenience meet in the kitchen, where original, exposed brick walls and ceiling beams welcome the large appliances, double sink, dish washer and over 30 square feet of granite countertops.

Barrow Academy, kitchen (view 2).  The kitchen's old world ambiance is completed by a fireplac.  Deep, wood cabinetry throughout the room are both comforting and useful.  With a square or oval table a family of eight could enjoy breakfast in the kitchen, or if the chef of the home so desires, an island and a table would fit here.

THE GUEST HOUSE

Barrow Academy, Guest House, exterior. This almost 200 year old, one-time shanty is now a stately and sturdy cottage for guests, domestic employees, tenants or office.  The house has the double front doors, typical of many small 19th Century Georgian homes.  In the background is the brick and stucco wall with arches.

Barrow Academy, Guest House, interior. Presently the guest house is richly appointed with hand-stenciled floors and lavish window treatments to house a corporate office.  However, the highly versatile house can be outfitted to serve many purposes.  Includes two equal-sized rooms plus a bathroom with shower.  This photo shows about 1/3 of the interior space.
